Random Rambles: What Motivates Me?

This week everyone has been buzzing about the Golden Globes, primarily Oprah Winfrey’s speech. I ended up watching the video the next day but was still deeply moved by what she said. (If you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out here) Something in particular that stuck out to me was her statement regarding the resilience of people. “I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our …

Perform 4: Trapped In Our Minds

Have you ever felt trapped before?  Whether trapped in a relationship, trapped in a job, or trapped in an area or stage of life we all have experienced a sensation of being trapped.  What if I told you that most likely you were trapped in your mind without even knowing it?  What am I talking about?  I’m referring to what’s commonly known as “thinking traps”.  Thinking traps are patterns we allow our mind to stay within that impact our overall wellbeing and performance. Since we talked about the power of the mind in the previous post, I thought it would …

Perform 3: Change Your Thoughts, Change Yourself

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten lost in thinking. My brain goes at mach speed the majority of the time, and often I’m not even aware that it’s happening. I would be willing to bet that you’re in the same boat- your brain often runs away with you, whether it’s into fantasy, the future, past experiences, or just the groceries you need to pick up after work. Our thoughts are a relatively constant stream, and that’s important because if you can notice when your thoughts have launched you into another dimension, you can also control them to …

Perform 2: The Triangle To Rule Them All

Alright y’all, sorry for the blogging hiatus but here we are with the next installment of the Perform series! *cue fanatical cheering*  So I’m going to do my best right now to make a relatively dry topic one that is more relatable and understandable: the Cognitive Behavioral Triangle. This is how I have it displayed in my office at work The triangle, as we shall now call it, is a way of conceptualizing our lives so we can address how to change patterns we typically fall into.  Let’s start with the basics and then I will explain how it applies …

Perform 1: What Holds You Back?

Today we are going to work on some skill building before we dive into the mental-health side of this blog.  Because we are emphasizing being able to “Perform” optimally, we need to figure out what exactly that looks like.  The first part of performing is figuring out your goals and what obstacles lie ahead.  We are going to start today off with some basics of goal setting.  The keys are to: Make goals specific Make them measurable Make them time oriented Pretty straightforward, right?  My current athletic goal is to compete in the Training 3 Day at Rebecca Farm in …

Perform Series

I have been pondering for quite some time about the kind of topics I want to blog about.  I’ve discussed ideas with friends, put things out on Facebook, and polled Twitter.  The primary concept that has been buzzing in my brain is that of “perform”.  Per Merriam-Webster, to perform means to carry out an action/pattern of behavior or to give a performance.  The key to this is that performing is a very broad term- it can encompass everything from a sporting event, to a business presentation, to an interview, and to everyday functioning.  This is why I’m proposing the idea …

What Is Mindful Moxie?

What all goes into a name?  I had never really pondered this until I sat down with a fuzzy vision of what I wanted to create and was presented with that very issue.  In our lives, names mean so much, labels mean everything, and we most certainly judge books by their covers.  Once I began to think about it, the task seemed incredibly daunting.  I spent hours laboring over thesaurus.com and talking to friends, trying to imagine what name would define “this”.  With the help of a handful of close friends, and particularly the assistance of my mother, I came up with …
